'ENTERPRISE' by James D. Philips
'ENTERPRISE' by James D. Philips

J-BOAT 'ENTERPRISE'

State-of-the-art scratch built model of the famous J-Boat ENTERPRISE, 1930 America's Cup Defender against SHAMROCK V, built by master model builder James D. Philips. All fittings are hand crafted with superlative accuracy (working turnbuckles, etc.). Built to scale and extensively researched. Custom case. ENTERPRISE was designed by William Starling Burgess and was an engineering marvel. She carried a complicated duralumin mast held together by more than 80,000 rivets and weighed 1/3 less than her competitors' steel and wooden rigs. Her "Park Avenue" boom (named because two crewmen could walk on it side-by-side) had tracks and slides that allowed for optimal shape and trim of the mainsail. Harold Vanderbilt masterfully sailed her to victory in four straight races, winning The Cup. ENTERPRISE registered 121' LOA, 80' LWL.

Case dims.: 38 x 28 x 9 in. ( 96.52 x 71.12 x 22.86 cm )
$19,599.

RACING SHARPIE by George Bullitt

RACING SHARPIE

Fine scratch-built model of a New Haven RACING SHARPIE by George Bullitt. This Boat is attributed to maker Lester Rowe of New Haven and was built between 1888-94 for racing on Lake Champlain. The Racing Sharpie was a vastly upgraded version of its working cousin, the Oyster Tonging Sharpie. It featured remarkable springboards which 9 of her 12 man crew would use as hiking boards "to hold her feet" as Howard Chapelle remarked. The boomkin (outrigger) was thought to have been copied from the Sandbagger Racing Sloop.

Scale: 1/2" = 1'. Custom cased
Case dims.: 28 x 32 x 6 5/8 in. ( 71.12 x 81.28 x 16.83 cm )
